Natascha:
This is indeed sad news. I have a warm recollection of many discussions
with her in meetings when she was a student, and then a faculty member at
Arizona.
Apart from her contributions to animal improvement from the private sector
perspective, she remained engaged with us, academics, and was always
considering innovative ideas.
I would like to express my condolences to all colleagues of Zoetis. We will
miss Sue.

Dear Colleagues and Friends:
It is with great sadness that we share that our beloved friend and
colleague, Dr. Sue DeNise, passed away on January 2, 2022, after a yearlong
fierce battle with cancer.
Sue was a brilliant and visionary scientist who had a remarkable career and
impact across the fields of animal science and genetics. She was the
matriarch of Genetics and Precision Animal Health innovation at Zoetis,
guiding her team with both boundless competitive spirit and compassionate
leadership. Her vision for modernizing the tools the industry delivers to
farmers today reflected her passion and ambition for the role of technology
in animal care. She often saw and embraced opportunities that others were
not brave enough to dream, and she challenged her teams to be better than
they ever dared imagine.
Sue had a remarkable impact on the people who were fortunate enough to know
and work with her. She was a pioneer in the development and application of
genomics to animal genetic improvement. Having worked as a professor in the
Animal Science department at the University of Arizona for almost 20 years,
Sue was an accomplished and renowned scientist before transitioning to the
private sector. After leaving academia, Sue joined MMI Genomics, where she
led the development of many animal genomic research projects and products,
including the first whole-genome sequence of livestock, followed by more
than a decade at Zoetis (formerly Pfizer Animal Health).
At Zoetis, she managed a team delivering innovative genomic solutions for
both temperate and tropically adapted beef and dairy cattle. These
technologies have been applied throughout the world and have accelerated
the use of genomic predictions in commercial production for traits related
to the health, productivity, and efficiency of cattle. Sue envisioned and
built an industry-leading platform that integrates bioinformatics tools and
data into animal health research, product development, and regulatory
processes. Sue also envisioned and then developed a research program for
incorporating precision animal agriculture into livestock production
management.
In 2017, Sue was inducted into The Ohio State University Animal Science
Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions and achievements in the
field of animal genetics. The Hall of Fame was started in 1943, and Sue is
only the third woman to be honored in its history.
Sue’s legacy will not be measured in products, papers, patents, awards,
and
recognitions. It will be defined by her strength, vision, and the countless
individuals she mentored and influenced throughout her journey. We are
among those that have been fortunate enough to have learned from Sue, been
supported by her, and have stood next to her. The indelible marks that she
left on those around her will be how and why she is remembered.
Sue will be missed beyond measure by all of us.
