Dear colleagues
It is a pleasure to announce the publication of my book
Agustn Blasco, Animal Genetic Improvement, CAB International, Wallingford, UK
Chapters 1 to 6 are about quantitative genetics, and chapters 7 to 10 are
about applied genetic improvement. I have included a GitHub repository
where errata will be collected as they appear, and also some supplementary
chapters not included in the book (aquaculture genetic improvement, meat
and milk from cell cultures). The link is https://github.com/ablasco-

Below is a brief description of the content:
1. Population genetics: Equilibrium for one and two genes, inbreeding, and
decomposition of genotypic value and genetic variance into additive,
dominant, and epistatic components. Includes a derivation of additive value
by least squares.
2. The infinitesimal model, genetic parameters, selection. Includes an
intuitive demonstration of the Bulmer effect.
3. Selection indices.
4. The linear model: fixed and random effects, mixed model, BLUP, and REML.
5. Bayesian methods. Includes data augmentation and intuitive
demonstrations of when and why selection is ignorable; that is, when
selected data can be analysed while ignoring that they are selected.
6. Genomic selection. Includes single-step selection and the Bayesian
alphabet.
7. Breeds, biodiversity, and conservation. Includes a discussion of when to
conserve and when not to.
8. Genetic improvement of prolific species: pigs, chickens, and rabbits.
9. Genetic improvement of non-prolific species: cattle, sheep, and goats.
10. The future: Cloning, Gene editing, -omics, limits to selection, global
warming.
